Hey there, Townshippers
Some places are defined by geography. Others quietly redefine it.
This week, we’re heading to Stanstead, where a strip of tape on a wooden floor marks the line between Canada and the United States, and where daily life has learned to move around, across, and beyond it. It’s a story about borders, yes, but more than that, it’s about habit, history, and neighbours who’ve never really seen each other as foreign.
Let’s step across the line. 👇

Center Stage This Week
Where the Line Runs Through the Room: Everyday Life in Stanstead

In most towns, a painted line on the floor wouldn’t mean much. In Stanstead, it can mark the boundary between two countries.
Step inside the storied Haskell Free Library and Opera House and you’ll find it: a strip of black tape running across polished wood. On one side, Canada. On the other, the United States. Built in 1904 as a gift to serve both communities, the library quite literally straddles the border between Stanstead and Derby Line, Vermont, a reminder that geography here has always been more bridge than barrier.
For generations, families on both sides have shared more than a view. Kids attended birthday parties across the line. Neighbours borrowed sugar without thinking about passports. Businesses relied on cross-border foot traffic, café regulars, hardware store customers, summer tourists drifting between Quebec and Vermont.
“People here don’t say they’re going ‘abroad,’” one local shop owner joked. “They’re just going down the street.”
Of course, border procedures have tightened over the years, and daily life now carries more formalities. But the human ties remain. Church suppers, school concerts, and cultural events still draw crowds from both countries, sometimes navigating logistics, always preserving tradition.
For small businesses in Stanstead’s historic core, that relationship matters. American visitors often stop in for antiques, baked goods, or a stroll along Dufferin Street before heading home. Likewise, Townships residents have long crossed south for groceries, gas, or an evening performance.
Cross-border towns rarely make national headlines unless something goes wrong. But here in Stanstead, the quieter story is more compelling: neighbours navigating paperwork with patience, preserving a 120-year-old library as common ground, and proving that lines on a map don’t erase community.
On winter afternoons, when snow softens the edges of the border posts, it’s easy to see what residents have always known — that in Stanstead, the most important connections aren’t drawn in ink.
