Hey there, Townshippers

Hope you’re settling into the rhythm of winter, slower mornings, colder air, and that feeling that the season is finally doing its thing. We’ve got a fresh mix of local stories, ideas for getting out (or staying in), and a few good reasons to lean into the week ahead.

Let’s get into it.👇

Center Stage This Week

This Is the Snowiest Week of the Year—By the Numbers

Climatologists often point to the first half of February as the statistical peak of winter snowfall in southern Quebec, when accumulation, frequency, and cold temperatures overlap. On the ground, that translates into towering snowbanks, tired backs, and communities shifting into full winter-survival mode.

For municipalities like Sherbrooke and Magog, this week is the annual stress test. Snow removal crews are operating at maximum capacity, often overnight, balancing priorities between arterial roads, residential streets, sidewalks, and school zones. By early February, much of the seasonal snow budget has already been committed, equipment has logged hundreds of hours, and staff are working through fatigue as much as flurries.

“People notice the snowbanks now because they’re simply higher,” one municipal worker explained in a past public briefing. Visibility at intersections drops, parking tightens, and snow storage sites are nearing their limits. This is typically when towns start trucking snow out of dense neighbourhoods, one of the most expensive steps in winter operations.

Local businesses feel the pressure too. In downtown cores, narrow sidewalks and limited parking can mean fewer walk-in customers. Café owners adjust hours, retailers shovel early and often, and delivery schedules become a game of weather roulette. At home, residents are deep into winter routines. Snowblower tune-ups, shared shovels between neighbours, and quiet acts of help become part of daily life.

The good news? Statistically speaking, once this week passes, the curve begins to bend. Snow will still fall, of course, it’s the Townships, but daylight lengthens, budgets stabilize, and the slow turn toward maple season begins. For now, though, this is winter at full volume, and the region is meeting it, shovel by shovel.

What’s On This Week?

🎻 Échos d’archet — Les 5@7 de l’OSS — Thu, Feb 5, 5:45 PM — Centre Québecor, Sherbrooke: Kick off the week with an intimate chamber music concert featuring the Quatuor Claudel-Canimex performing evocative string repertoire that celebrates nature and classical traditions. If you’ve been wanting a “big show” vibe without driving to Montréal, this is that moment. The bill includes RYMZ as opener, so you’re getting a full evening rather than a short set. Great option for fans of punchy beats, sharp hooks, and a crowd that’s there to move. Details 👉 theatregranada.com

🥾 Défi rando alpine Helly Hansen — Sat, Feb 7, Sun, Feb 8 — Bromont: This is the “earn your hot chocolate” weekend challenge: rack up uphill laps on the alpine touring/hiking routes from early morning into the night. The format is flexible—come for one climb or make it a personal endurance mission. You scan QR codes on trails to log entries and be eligible for prizes, which makes it fun even if you’re not racing anyone. Details 👉 bromontmontagne.com

🎪 Machine de cirque — Kintsugi — Tue, Feb 10, 7:00 PM — Salle Maurice-O’Bready, Sherbrooke: If you want a “wow” night out that feels both big-hearted and jaw-droppy, this is it. Kintsugi (the art of highlighting imperfections) becomes the show’s theme: a story-forward circus piece with serious acrobatic muscle and a more theatrical, emotional vibe than a typical stunt-fest.  Details 👉 centrecultureludes.ca
